Guard Break Reset Trick

Post by Fiend Busa » Thu Jan 16, 2014 4:25 am

*Note: I am not the founder of this technique. I was shown it by a friend that goes by the name of TheSigmaNinja back in 2010 playing NGS2. Not sure who first discovered this trick.

Performing this technique: Guard Broken -> Re-Push the block Button (L1*)

Benefits:

1. Will save you when in fighting against hordes of enemies
2. Some secret techniques can be pulled off with this (varies between each game)
3. Excellent against the Greater Fiends, makes them even easier to fight against
4. You can perform counters on guard breaking moves. Re-Push L1 -> Counter
5. Infinite loop The Greater Fiend Elizabeth

This technique works for all the Ninja Gaiden Games including the original 2004 release. With that said, I am certain this is not a bug, that or it's just an unattended side affect with how the combat system is programmed

That's pretty handy. I will try to keep that in mind. is it timing based?

no you just repush L1 (bloack) whenever Ryu guard is broken

but if you want to master it on someone like fiend genshin then it takes a lot of practising since his moves are really fast, i been doing it on fiend genshin for about couple months and im still not 100% with it, more like 90-95%

but for like Alexi, Volf, Liz, Zed etc... and generic enemies its real easy

if you keep practising it will become second nature

to be honest I don't think showing the button prompts would help much

its just lots of practicing and getting used to repushing L1 whenever you see ryu's guard broken

once you practice it enough your brain so to speak will automatically repush it for you lmao if that makes any sense :D

though if you really want I can show the button prompts for fiend genshin by recording my hands?

you can use Ryu's animation in game to know when to release L1, whenever you see him being thrown back is when his guard is broken

Does this trick even work in NGB/S? I'm trying to do it with Fiend Murai, but his 4 hit combo breaks through. Perhaps I'm off on the timing?

Thanks Fiend Busa! Indeed my timing was off. This is a little harder than I thought. I'm gonna need to practice more. :kungfu:

I find it tricky as well because I'm so used to dash-cancelling instead. It certainly requires some reconditioning.

Me too. So used to dashing out of the guard break. We're talking years of reconditioning.

you got it explained all wrong, especially for liz, you only reset your guard once not 4 times, she only breaks your guard once :thumb:

I haven't tried this yet but it looks incredible, amazing find! I'll be taking this to CH11 later for huge testing..

Edit: I'm trying it now. I think this changes everything about no UT play for ninja gaiden games, especially for ninja gaiden 2, I do not know much about 3 and RE.

Basically now, with this added tool to Ryu's arsenal, you have a full array of options to continue to fight intelligently, I only hope that it's not too simple, because this really does seem like it changes things.

Explanation: So if your guard is broken, which it inevitably will be broken against large groups of enemies, with this new mechanic, you have an option to guard break dash away with added I-frames, or reguard and counter enemies that would've followed you if you don't like the setup. Enemies are programmed to punish you like that, so as shown in Fiend Busa's video you can immedietly reguard and counter if that's what they are giving you.

The reason why this is so crucial it seems is that as soon as your guard breaks you can effectively read the crowd and decide on if you like what you see. You don't ? Well just reguard an IS that is thrown at you, or a group of melee ninjas that were following you not expecting you to counter so suddenly.

**This is probably the most important thing below**

--> if you condition yourself to always reguard, you can actually *still* guard break dash out of your reguard, it still is a blue dash that gives extra I-frames, so I consider this mechanic to be a super flexible way to handle anything that's trying to boss you around. <--

I don't think it's a glitch either since it's in every NG game. I'm going to continue to mess with it and see if it truly can tamely handle every big Ch11 encounter out there.

I haven't tested this yet, but does anyone know if this works on other move specific guard breaks like Rasetsu wind blades or Robot moves/rushes, etc? Doubtful but that'd be crazy.

Really great find!

Maybe maybe! I'm still testing some things, but this mechanic certainly seems to be a powerful tool.

Also, something to add here is that I can confirm that you can (This is what I'm calling this now, for convenience) reguard against Rasetsu's wind blades which
cause a special animation guard break.

So it looks like, you block one and get thrown back a bit, reguard, block one and get thrown back, reguard, etc. They are quite fast especially if it's more than 1 Rasetsu throwing them, but again, this is obviously very important for people interested in no UT stuff.

I'd like to add videos but I do not have anything that's very impressive to contribute. all I'm doing is just replaying Ch11 over and over with various weapons testing stuff. I'll see what I can come up with though, I appreciate the interest!
