Hurricane Pack 1 Karma Run - Full Run Up.

Post by JTB123 » Fri Mar 16, 2018 7:25 am

Well it took almost 9 years but I finally did another full blown karma run and it's for HP1

I finished this run yesterday, me and Bigalski are doing some commentary for the videos to explain more about the HP1 scoring system and also my process for breaking down the game. Karma running in HP1 is very different than in NGB due to various changes and due to how much experience I have karma running in NGB it took a while to really leave behind that mindset and start looking at HP1 as a different game.

Chapter 1 is up and I'll be putting the other videos up as soon as they are ready. Me and Al still have a lot of commentary to do so some of the videos won't be up for a while.

The run went extremely well, looking back there were moments where I was still playing like it was NGB which cost me some points and ultimately made me fall short of my goal which was 37 million but I cam very close and these videos will serve as a guide for anyone looking to crack that milestone.

One thing I'm really happy with about this series is that aren't any inconsistencies in my score on the videos. Even I redid a fight to get an extra 1,000 points I recorded the segment so my video represents everything I got on the run. I just wish I could have replayed chapter 1 with the new strategy for farming ninjas for intercepts, that would have pushed my final score well past what I was aiming for.

You didn't mention focusing on ETs instead of UTs. I love the intercept into ET.

I cannot wait for chapter 3 video. What surprised me is that after so many years this game also still shines even though it was released in 2004. The real surprise was that you can get 37 million even if it was considered impossible by some people over on an old forum where I was a member from.

What people should do is allow players to start a new HP1 game or even do a successive play on it. It would make the game even more attractive right now as the newer players get to know the game itself.

JTB, how many points did you come short of 37 milion? Because I thought Balbaid's score could not be beaten after his Karma Run because he was the only person to score over 36 million on HP1.

Off-topic: who was the person who scored the highest on HP2 and can that score still be beaten?

I was just under 68k off from 37 million, after this run was done I went back through HP1 to put together the end clear times and kills though and found an amazing strategy for Emp2 which would easily push me past 37 million on another run which I'm really temtped to do. I redid chapter 1 and am already 13k ahead.

Balbaid and Bigaslki's runs helped me immensely on this run, but the more I'm digging into it the more I am realising how different karma running is on the HP1 system. Ony my run up until about chapter 7 I was thinking like it was NGB for the most part and not drawing much from my knowledge of the combat system. I found a brilliant strategy for Mages for example which stems from a little thing I have always known about their teleport and the nunchuks.

The odds of me doing another run are pretty high, in some ways this run was the ultimate mock run and I now know where I can improve and how to approach the fights. It's just such a shame more people can't experience the hurricane packs, they are so much fun and intercept is fantastic.

I think Captain Tuttle had the highest score for HP2 but I'm not sure, Bigalski might know. It kills me not having a save for HP2 on my X-Box.

A bit bad you don't have the save. You would have easily got the highscore knowing what you know now about the scoring system for HP2

The reason the scores for HP1 are so high today JR is because we took the knowledge we gained from NGB and incorporated them into HP1 so we had the advantage over the original players. I have notes from Saryah explaining how he got his score but said he couldn't understand how the top guy got his. Oh how the game has evolved. 36 million was considered impossible back then and just because Balbaid was the only one who did it, doesn't mean it couldn't have been beat. He said he just focused on the points I didn't get after watching my videos (which were rushed) but JTB took it to another level and beat his score by over 600K. Now that's impressive. Please don't think I'm bashing Balbaid because I'm not and since he wasn't going to be able to upload his score in time, I don't think he gave it 100%. I wish the old NG vets could see how far the game has come.

Some scores are hacked though but the legit top places are amazing players by the looks of it. I wish I could reverse time itself and knowing what I know now I'd give it a go again. Definitely a top score. Thx bigalski.

I remember when Balbaid came out with his MN Ch 1 video. It was a thing of beauty. I knew he was going to set records.

I put a comment on your Ch16 run about the clear time. I think it is pretty close or exactly 6 hours

What did you think of this run? Bring back good memories? I've never done the HP.
